Reflections on 2024: Challenges and Changes in Temporary Recruitment for the Not-for-Profit Sector
2024 has been a year of considerable challenge and change for recruitment in the not-for-profit sector. The landscape has shifted noticeably, with both clients and candidates adopting new approaches to hiring and career moves. Many organisations are looking for more from their recruitment partners—seeking a greater volume of CVs, an exact match for every requirement, and faster turnaround times—whilst understandably working within tighter budgets. These changes reflect the increasing pressures on not-for-profits to deliver more with less, requiring flexibility and innovation from everyone involved.
Building relationships has been more complex this year, both with clients and candidates. Many candidates are understandably hesitant to fully commit in a market that feels increasingly uncertain, while clients are relying more heavily on direct recruitment methods for both temporary and permanent positions. We’ve also noticed recruitment processes taking longer, with timelines extending from an average of three months to as long as six months to a year in some cases. Furthermore, the widespread restructures across the sector have created a fluid and constantly changing environment, requiring us all to adapt quickly.
Looking Ahead to 2025
Despite the challenges, there are positive trends emerging that give us optimism for the year ahead. One clear shift is the growing demand for temporary roles as organisations navigate ongoing restructures. Temporary recruitment is becoming an essential solution, offering flexibility and agility as organisations manage change. While many clients are growing more confident in handling some recruitment in-house, the rise in temp roles creates an opportunity for agencies to provide vital expertise and support where it’s most needed.
As we move into 2025, we remain confident that the sector will continue to adapt and evolve in positive ways. By staying flexible, maintaining a focus on trust, and tailoring our approach to meet the unique needs of our clients and candidates, we’re looking forward to supporting the sector through the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
